NATIONAL ANARCHIST BOOKFAIR

Saturday May 2

The National Anarchist bookfair returned to Bradford for the second time and did brisk trade throughout the day, as well as providing a relaxed social space after the frantic activity of May Day.

The Sound Gallery, where the bookfair was based, also hosted the Libertarian Film Festival, moved from the chaotic Pictureville at the last minute.

The football tournament kicked off with the sun coming out to greet the 12 teams, which included a team from Hanua in Germany, a deaf team, a womens team, and the current champs from Leeds - Republica Highland.

Meanwhile, at the 1 in 12 Club, a Punk All-Dayer raged with Scatha, Luddgang, Unslug, Minute Manifesto, Eradicate, Shank and John Holmes.

WORKERS AID FOR BOSNIA

May 2

Marsha Singh MP hosted a public meeting at the Saathi Centre, on Ethnic Cleansing in Bosnia and the current situation in Kosova, which is threatening a repeat of the Bosnian massacres. Organised by the Trades Council, it was one of dozens of meetings at venues across the city over the May Day week.

Feel The Power

Fundamental

Live at Bradford University, Mayday `98.

[Fun'da'mental at the Uni]

Some gigs are good, some gigs are bad, some gigs are OK. Then there are rapturous, spiritual experiences like this one, which remind you why music is a big part of our lives. This band bombards its audience with unfailing energy and feeling. Underpinning the warm evocative sounds of the subcontinent are primeval rhythms and a furious onslaught of righteous rap message. This message is delivered without pathos or patronisation but with passion, pride and purpose e.g. "Let’s put an end to racism, because it’s boring!"

Those who felt the power will not forget, and will have the untouchable satisfaction that they were there. They might also have a souvenir free T-shirt, Fundamental’s parting gesture to a crowd who departed fully charged.

May Day '98

May 1

May Day '98 kicked off with a lively march through Bradford, into the City Centre for a full afternoon of free entertainment with live music, juggling, poems and dance. The evening saw the 1 in 12 Club as it's never been seen before, heaving with locals and visitors for the May Day Conference. Highlights of the evening included the reminiscences of two middle aged Class warriors Ian Bone and Martin Wright; a "rebel songs from the class war" singalong with classics like "fuck off yuppie scum"; and finally the legendary CRAP disco and footy extravaganza (how do they play football the next day after this?)
